Poster Information

Research and informational posters serve as vessels for communicating research findings and knowledge using a blend of written content, data visualizations, and imagery. These posters are commonly used by researchers to present and discuss their work at conferences and symposiums. They typically include infographics, charts, maps, and photographs, arranged in various organizational styles ranging from minimalist to detailed and intricate designs.

Posters are generally designed in landscape orientation, though square or portrait orientations are also used. The standard dimensions often adhere to a 4:3 ratio (4 feet wide by 3 feet tall), but it's essential to verify the specific size requirements from the conference or symposium organizers. If this information isn't readily available, contacting the venue directly can provide clarity on the dimensions of their poster holders. If you're new to creating research posters, seek advice from colleagues, mentors, or advisors for guidance and consider reviewing examples of their past work.

Poster sessions often feature many presentations in a single room, with attendees browsing at their own pace. To attract attention to your poster, consider using a captivating title and visually engaging design. Effective use of visuals can draw viewers in, while your presentation content should aim to maintain their interest.

Creation Software

Microsoft Powerpoint

Microsoft PowerPoint is accessible to BYU faculty and staff through Office 365 and can be installed to computers. Collaborative work is facilitated via OneDrive, allowing multiple creators to work together seamlessly. PowerPoint integrates well with Excel for creating charts and graphs, making it a preferred choice for research posters. However, it offers limited alignment and design tools compared to specialized software.

Google Slides

As a web-based application, it seamlessly transitions across different computers regardless of operating systems. Google Slides excels in collaboration, supporting multiple users to edit simultaneously. Drawing heavily from PowerPoint, it offers basic alignment and design tools.

Apple Keynote

Apple Keynote is a proprietary software exclusive to Apple products, available on Mac machines. While it offers limited alignment tools, Keynote boasts more extensive design capabilities compared to Microsoft PowerPoint and Google Slides. This makes it a preferred choice for users seeking advanced design features within the Apple ecosystem.

Canva

Canva offers a range of features through its online platform, including a limited free version and subscription options billed monthly or annually. While many functions are accessible for free, some premium elements require a subscription. Canva allows users to create files online and download them in formats such as PNG, JPEG, or PDF. Collaboration features are not always available in the free version, and while alignment tools are provided, they may not be intuitive for all users.

Adobe InDesign

This software is available to UW-Madison students, faculty, and staff via all computer lab machines, both in the labs and for checkout. Using an Adobe ID will allow for easy transition from one computer to another. With layers and alignment tools, this is one of the best options for creating posters if you know or have time to learn the software.

Adobe Illustrator

This accessible to BYU faculty and staff free of charge. Using an Adobe ID facilitates seamless transitions between computers. Featuring robust capabilities such as layers and alignment tools, Adobe Illustrator provides another excellent option for creating posters, provided users are familiar with or have time to learn its functionalities.
